Developmental Listening & Auditory Skills Assessment

Specialist listening assessment for younger children

Standard APD test batteries require a child to be at least 7–8 years old and have sufficient language and attention to complete formal tasks. For younger children with listening concerns, we use a range of specialist approaches to build a picture of listening function and identify where support is needed.

Our approach with younger children

Detailed case history

Understanding the child's listening concerns across home, nursery and school settings, and how these affect daily life.

Validated questionnaires

Standardised listening and auditory behaviour questionnaires completed by parents and teachers to build a comprehensive picture.

Auditory skills assessment (ASA) and Phonemic Synthesis Picture test

Age-appropriate tasks to assess speech perception, listening in noise and auditory memory  - this can also be delivered in a play-based context.

Full hearing assessment

Ensuring that any underlying hearing or middle ear issues are identified and addressed before attributing difficulties to processing.

Signs that may suggest listening difficulties in younger children

Difficulty following multi-step instructions
Appearing not to listen or frequently distracted
Struggling in noisy environments such as nursery or classroom
Needing instructions repeated or simplified
Speech or language delay
Difficulty with phonological awareness or early reading
